On January 27, 1972, The Woman Known As The "Queen Of Gospel Song," Died At Age 60, In Evergreen Park, Illinois. Mahalia Jackson Was Gospel Music's First International Superstar.

Reared In New Orleans, Louisiana In The Early 1900s, Mahalia Jackson Began Singing Gospel In The Church Choir.

In 1945, Her Recording Of "Move On Up A Little Higher," Sold Almost 2 Million Copies And Brought Her Immediate Fame. The Successful Recording Led To Appearances At Carnegie Hall And On "The Ed Sullivan Show," As Well As A European Tour.

Toward The End Of Her Life Jackson Became A Civil Rights Activist And Author. In 1970 She Wrote A Cookbook Titled "Mahalia Jackson Cooks Soul." Two Years Earlier, She Sang At The Funeral Of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., A Request He Made Prior To His Death.

Bessie Coleman & Willa Brown

Bessie Coleman Was Born In Texas, January 26, 1893, To Sharecropper Parents. She Was Twelfth Of Thirteen Children. She Was Inspired To Become A Pilot By Eugene Jacques Bullard, A Black Pilot Who Flew For The French During World War I. 

Coleman Was Refused Admission To Flight-Training Schools In America Because Of Her Color And Sex. Subsequently, She Learned To Speak French While Working As A Manicurist. She Went To Paris In 1920, And After Ten Months, Had Her Airplane Pilot's License From The Federation Aeronautique International. She Was The First Black, As Well As The First American Woman, To Get An International Pilot's License.

On September 3, 1922, Bessie Coleman Made Her First Flight In An American Airplane, At An Exhibition Honoring The All-Black 15th Infantry Regiment Of The New York National Guard. Four Years Later, On April 30, 1926, She Was Killed When Her Plane Crashed During A Test Flight In Jacksonville, Florida. Prior To Her Death, Coleman Had Plans To Open A Flight Training School For African Americans.

SPECIAL NOTE: Willa Brown Gleaned Strength And Inspiration From The Life Work Of Bessie Coleman. She Was Instrumental In Establishing The Coffey School of AeronauticsFirst Black American Woman To Get A Commercial Pilot's License In The U.S. She Was Also The First Black American To Achieve An Officer's Rank In The Civil Air Patrol And Lead The Fight To Integrate Blacks Into The U.S. Army Corp.

John Harold Johnson, Founder Of The Johnson Publishing Company, Was Born January 19, 1918, In Arkansas City, Arkansas.

Johnson's Family Moved To Chicago During The 1930s And Where He Attended DuSable High School, The University Of Chicago (On A Scholarship), And Later, Northwestern University.

While Working For The Black-Owned, Supreme Liberty Insurance Company, Johnson Created A Business Newsletter Which Spawned The Idea For His First Publication, The Negro Digest, In 1942.

Two Publications, EBONY And JET Magazines, Became Staples Of The Johnson Publishing Company. With The Addition Of Fashion Fair Cosmetics And EBONY Fashion Fair, Johnson Publishing Would Later Become An International Media And Cosmetics Enterprise, And The Largest African American Owned Media Publishing Company In The World. And In 1982 John Johnson Became The
First African American To Appear On The Forbes 400.

Howard University Renamed Their School of Communications After Johnson And Awarded Him An Honoris Causa Doctor Of Humane Letters -- One Of More Than 30 Honorary Doctoral Degrees He Received From Institutions Across The Country. In November 2005, A Portion Of Chicago’s Famed Michigan Avenue Was Renamed John H. Johnson Avenue.

Johnson Was Also The Recipient Of Numerous Awards That Spanned Decades -- From The NAACP Spingarn Medal To The Most Outstanding Black Publisher In History Award From The National Newspaper Publishers Association. Johnson Publishing Has Also Been Named The Number One Black Business By Black Enterprise Four Times. In 1996, President Bill Clinton Awarded Johnson The Presidential Medal of Freedom, The Nation's Highest Civilian Honor. He Served As A Board Member Or Trustee Of Numerous Businesses And Philanthropic And Cultural Organizations.

Johnson Died August 8, 2005 at the age of 87.

James Farmer

Civil Rights Activist, James Leonard Farmer, Jr. Was Born January 12, 1920, In Marshall, Texas.

Known As One Of The Civil Rights Movement's "Big 4," -- Along With Martin Luther King, Jr., Roy Wilkins (Chief Of The NAACP) And Whitney Young ( Urban League Head) -- Farmer Co-Founded The Congress Of Racial Equality (CORE) In 1942, And Played A Major Role In Charting the Course Of The Struggle For Black Civil Rights During The 1950's And 1960's.

CORE Sought To Bring An End To Racial Segregation In America Through Active Nonviolence (Ghandian Philosophy). Farmer Was The Organization's First Leader, Serving As the National Chairman From 1942 To 1944.
With Farmer As A Key Strategist, CORE Led Freedom Rides In 1961. It Was A Nonviolent Initiative To Desegregate Interstate Buses And Terminals, But Participants Did Encounter Violence. He Also Helped Recruit CORE Members, James Chaney, Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner, Who Were Murdered In Mississippi During The Freedom Rides.

Farmer Resigned From CORE In 1966 To Teach At Lincoln University And New York University. President Bill Clinton Awarded Him The Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1998.

James L. Farmer Jr. Was A Kind Of Child Prodigy. At The Age of 14, He Was Attending Wiley College And Was On The Debate Team. This Has Been Portrayed In The 2007 Film, "The Great Debaters," Directed By And Starring Denzel Washington.

Farmer Died July 9, 1999, Of Complications From Diabetes. He Was 79.

Movie Director/Screenwriter/Producer, John Daniel Singleton, Was Born January 6, 1968, In Los Angeles California.

Following Graduation From The School Of Cinematic Arts At The University Of Southern California, Singleton Made Movie History with "Boyz 'N the Hood," His 1991 Directorial Debut. At Age 24, He Became The Youngest Individual And The First Black American Ever To Be Nominated For A Best Director Academy Award.

John Singleton Went On To Direct And/Or Produce Several More Successful Movies And Videos, Including: "Poetic Justice" (1993), "Higher Learning" (1995), "Rosewood" (1997), "Shaft" (2000), "Baby Boy" (2001) And "Hustle And Flow" (2005). In Addtion To "Boyz 'N The Hood," 1991 Was Also The Year Singleton Directed Michael Jackson's Music Video, "Remember The Time," Which Also Featured Eddie Murphy, Magic Johnson And Iman.

Singleton Continues To Be One Of The Most Influential And Talented Filmmakers In In The Industry.

January 5 Has Been Designated, George Washington Carver Day, In Honor Of The Brilliant Agricultural Chemist Who Died Jan 5, 1943, At The Age Of 78.

George Washington Carver Was Born A Slave In Diamond, Missouri, During The Civil War. His Birthplace Is Now A National Monument.

Nicknamed "The Peanut Man" And The "Wizard Of Tuskegee," Carver Headed The Agricultural Depratment Of Tuskegee Institute In Alabama And Was One Of The Most Prominent Scientists Of His Day.

He Was Famous For Finding New Uses For Everyday Items. Carver Discovered 188 Ways To Use The Sweet Potato And 300 Uses For The Peanut, Which Included Peanut Milk, Dye, A Scrubbing Powder, Sweets, Flour And Livestock Feed.

Dr. Carver's Research In Improved Farming Techniques Helped Revolutionize Farming In America. His Main Concern Was Improving The Condition Of Poor Southern Farmers. He Organized Our-Reach Programs To Assist Them.

He Encouraged Farmers To Diversify From The Single-Cash Crop Of Cotton, Which Depleted Nutrients From The Soil, And Promoted The Planting Of Peanuts Cowpeas And Sweet Potatoes. In Addition, He Formulated Cheaper Farm Inputs Like Organic Fertilizer, To Substitute For More Costly Commercial Fertilizers.

Among Dr. Carver's Honors: The NAACP Spingarn Medal In 1923, The Roosevelt Medal For Distinguished Service In 1939 And The Thomas Edison Foundation Award In 1943.
