Hattie McDaniel
Hattie McDaniel, The First Black American To Win An Academy Award, Was Born On June 10, 1895 In Wichita, Kansas. On February 29, 1940 Hattie McDaniel Won The Oscar For Best Supporting Actress For Her Role As Mammy In The 1939 Film, Gone With The Wind. McDaniel Began Her Career On The Vaudeville Circuit. An Excellent Blues Singer, She Was The First Black Woman To Sing On Radio. She Starred In The Beulah Series On Both Radio And Television. During The 1930's And 1940's, McDaniel Acted In Over 70 Films. Her Roles Were Nearly All The Same---The Supportive And Outspoken "Mammy" Type, Which She Perfected In Gone With The Wind. When Asked About Her Limited Movie Roles McDaniel Said "I'd Rather Play A Maid Than Be One." McDaniel Has Two Stars On The Hollywood Walk of Fame: One For Her Contributions To Radio At 6933 Hollywood Boulevard, And One For Motion Pictures At 1719 Vine Street. In 1975, She Was Inducted Into The Black Filmmakers Hall Of Fame, And In 2006 Became The First Black Oscar Winner Honored With A US Postage Stamp. Joe Frazier On February 16, 1970, Joe Frazier Knocked Out Jimmy Ellis In The 5th Round, In New York City's Madison Square Garden, To Become The World Heavyweight Boxing Champion --- Succeeding Muhammad Ali.
Immediately Afterward, Frazier, Who Up To That Point Had Won 25 Fights With 22 Knockouts, Took Time off To Perform With His Band, The Knockouts, Saying "I'm Gonna Sing Rock 'N Roll Until That Muhammad Ali Or Cassius Clay, Or Whatever His Name Is, Can Fight Me." On March 8, 1971, At Madison Square Garden, Joe Frazier And Muhammad Ali Met In The First Of their Three Bouts. Frazier Won A Clear, 15-Round, Unanimous Decision. Frazier's Second Fight Against Ali Took Place In 1974, In New York, With Ali Winning A 12-round Unanimous Decision. On October 1, 1975, Frazier And Ali Met In Their Third And Final Fight In Philippines. In The Fight Dubbed The "Thrilla In Manila," Frazier Lost To Muhammad Ali In 14 Rounds.
Frazier Would Eventually Retire In 1981. His Overall Record Is 32 Wins, 4 Losses And 1 Draw --- With 27 Wins By Knockout. He Won 73% Of His Fights By Knockout, Compared To 60% For Ali And 84% for George Foreman.
Born (January 12, 1944) And Reared In Beaufort, South Carolina, This Son Of Poor Sharecroppers Won The Gold Medal In The Heavyweight Category At The 1964 Summer Olympics In Tokyo, Soon After His 20th Birthday. Frazier Turned Professional In 1965.

Alex Haley Author Of "Roots" .On February 10, 1992, Author, Alexander Murray Palmer Haley Died Of a Heart Attack In Seattle, Washington. He Was Buried Beside His Childhood Home In Henning, Tennessee.
Born August 11, 1921, In Ithaca, New York, Haley Is Best Known As The Author Of "Roots: The Saga of an American Family" And "The Autobiography Of Malcolm X," The Latter Of Which He Wrote In Collaboration With Malcolm X.
After Dropping Out Of Alcorn State University, Haley Enlisted In The Coast Guard On May 29, 1939, Where He Served For The Next 20 Years.
It Was While In The Coast Guard That He Honed His Writing Craft. One Of The Ways He Did This Was By Writing Love Letters For The Other Sailors Who Had Girlfriends -- A Service For Which He Was Paid. He Later Worked As A Journalist For The Coast Guard.
After Leaving The Service In 1959, Haley Began Writing For "Reader's Digest" And Later For "Playboy" Magazine, Where He Interviewed Such Notable People As Miles Davis, Martin Luther King, Jr., Cassius Clay (Now Muhammad Ali), Jim Brown, Johnny Carson, Sammy Davis, Jr. Melvin Belli, Quincy Jones, American Natzi Party Leader, George Lincoln Rockwell And Malcolm X. The Malcolm X Interview Led To The Collaboration On The Activist's Autobiography, "The Autobiography of Malcolm X."
In 1976, Haley Published "Roots: The Saga of an American Family." The Story Begins In A Village In Gambia, West Africa, With Haley's Own Forefather, Kunta Kinte. While Hunting For Material To Make A Drum, Kunte kinte Was Captured And Brought To Maryland As A Slave. Roots Traces The Lives Of Kunta Kinte's Offspring. The Book Was Eventually Made Into A History-Making Miniseries On ABC.
In The Late 1980s, Haley Began Working On a Second Historical Novel Based On Another Branch Of His Family, Traced Through His Paternal Grandmother, Queen —The Daughter Of A Black Slave Woman And Her White Master.
Haley Died Before Completing The Book. At His Request, The Book Was Finished By David Stevens And Published As "Alex Haley's Queen." It Was Subsequently Made Into A TV Movie In 1993.

Paul Laurence Dunbar On February 9, 1906, Paul Laurence Dunbar Died At The Age Of 34, From Tuberculosis.
Born June 27, 1872, In Dayton, Ohio, This Son Of Former Slaves Became A Prolific And Popular Turn-Of The-Century Writer. Dunbar Was The First Black American Poet To Gain National Eminence. Booker T. Washington Dubbed Him "Poet Laureate Of The Negro Race." Dunbar Was Most Widely Known For ("Negro") Dialect Poetry, Although He Favored His Standard English Writings.
His First Volume Of Poetry, "Oak And Ivory," Was Published In 1892, With The Help Of His Friends Orville And Wilbur Wright, The Acknowledged Inventors Of America's First Airplane.
His 1896 Collection, "Majors And Minors," Won Critical Acclaim, And In 1901 His Novel, "Sport Of The Gods," Was Published. "Sport Of The Gods" Represents Dunbar's Transition Into Naturalist Tradition Embraced By Writers In The Early 1900's. Naturalist Novels Presented A More "Scientific" View Of Life.

Boxer, Jack Johnson Won His First Title On February 3, 1903, Beating "Denver" Ed Martin Over 20 Rounds For The World Colored HeavyweightChampionship. His Efforts To Win The Full Title Were Blocked, As Then World Heavyweight Champion James J. Jeffries, Refused To Face Him .
Johnson Eventually Won The Heavyweight Title After Defeating Tommy Burns In Sydney, Australia On December 26, 1908, In Front Of 20,000 Spectators. The Bout Ended After The Referee Stopped The Fight In The 14th Round And Awarded Johnson A TKO Decision.
On July 4, 1910, A Boxing Match Billed As "The Fight Of The Century," Took Place Heavyweight Champion, Jack Johnson And White Challenger, James J. Jeffries, In Reno, Nevada. Jeffries Came Out Of Retirement As "The Great White Hope," To Take Down The World's First Black Heavyweight Boxing Champion. Whites Generally Believed That A World Boxing Championship Was Too Prestigious A Prize For A Black Man To Hold.
Johnson Knocked Jeffries Out In The 15th Round Of The Fight And Retained His Championship. White America Was Outraged While Black America Celebrated The Victory. This Led To A Backlash Of White-On-Black Rioting, In Which 11 Black Americans Were Killed. A True Renaissance Man. During His Distinguished Career Johnson Was A Lawyer (He Was The First Black Person Admitted To The Florida Bar), Diplomat (U.S. Consul To Venezuela And Nicaragua), Educator, Civil Rights Activist Poet, Editor, Literary Critic And Author.
As A Black American Literary Critic And Author, Johnson Had A Profound Influence On Black Literature In The 1900's. He Was A Major Presence During the Harlem Renaissance.
His Books Includes The Autobiography Of An Ex-Colored Man (1912), The Book Of American Negro Spirituals (1925) And Black Manhattan (1935).
Johnson Died June 26, 1938.
