During The 1980s King Reaffirmed Her Long-Standing Opposition To Apartheid -- Participating In A Series Of Sit-In Protests In Washington, DC That Prompted Nationwide Demonstrations Against South African Racial Policies. In 1986, She Traveled To South Africa And Met With Winnie Mandela, While Mandela's Husband, Nelson Mandela, Was Still A Political Prisoner On Robben Island.
She Was Also The Main Force Behind The Establishment Of The Martin Luther King Center For Justice In Atlanta, Georgia In 1982.
A Recipient Of The Congressional Gold Medal, Coretta Scott King Died From Cancer On January 30, 2006.

On April 26, 1844, James Beckwourth Discovered A Path Through The Sierra Nevada Mountains That Now Bears His Name. Beckwourth Pass, On U.S. Alt 40, Between Reno Nevada And Sacramento, California, Made Overland Travel To The Gold Fields Of California, Possible.
Ironically, In 1798, Beckwourth Was Born A Slave On The Same Day, April 26th, That He Discovered The Pass. Although There Is Disagreement Among Historians About His Parentage, It's Believed That He Was The Son Of A Slave And A White Revolutionary War Officer.
Jim Beckwourth Escaped From Slavery At Age 19 And Went On To Become One Of The Most Famous And Notable Figures In The Early History On America's Western Frontier. He Also Co-founded Pueblo Colorado.
In 1824, Jim Beckwourth Was Adopted By The Crow Indians And Lived With Them For Several Years. He Fought Side By Side With Them In Battle And Eventually Attained The Rank Of Crow Chief.
Beckworth Was Known For His Toughness. He Was A Trapper, A Trade Frontiersman, A Gold Prospector, An Indian Fighter And Army Scout.

On January 27, 1961, Price Became The First Black Since Marian Anderson To Appear In A Major Role With The Metropolitan Opera. She Debuted At The Met As Leonora In Verdi's II Trovotore. She Received A 42-Minute Standing Ovation For The Performance --- The Longest In Met History.
On January 3, 1985, Price, The First Black American To Gain Fame As An International Star Of The Grand Opera, Gave Her Final Performance At The Metropolitan Opera In New York City.
Leontyne Price's Performance Of Aida, Which Was Telecast Live From Lincoln Center, Is Considered The Definitive Modern Operatic Event, Against Which All Others Are Measured. Price Ranks Among The Best Sopranos In The Modern Era and Is Said To Have "The Perfect Verdi Voice."
Born In Laurel, Mississippi, Trained At The Julliard School Of Music And Inspired As A Child By Marian Anderson, Price Won 13 Grammy Awards For Her Recordings And Three Emmy Awards For Her Television Appearances. On April 13, 1964, Sidney Poitier Won The Oscar For BEST ACTOR, For His Role In The Movie, Lilies Of The Field. In Doing So, He Became The First Black American To Win An Academy Award In A LEAD ROLE.
(Hattie McDaniel Was The First Black American To Win an Oscar, For Her Supporting Role In Gone With The Wind, 1939).
Poitier's Career Changed The Way Black Men Were Depicted On Film. For More Than Six Decades, He Has Made The Personal And Conscious Choice To Play Intelligent, Articulate, Charming, Proud And Attractive Male Characters. While Other Actors Before Him, Like Paul Robeson, Gave Dignity To Their Film Roles, Poitier's Presence In The Industry Was More Consistent. Of His Many Films, The Most Mentioned Are "The Defiant Ones," "To Sir With Love," "In The Heat Of The Night," "Guess Who's Coming To Dinner," "A Raisin The Sun" And "They Call Me MISTER Tibbs!!"
Poitier has Also Directed A Number Of Popular Movies. During The 1970s He Directed And Starred With Harry Belafonte In "Buck And The Preacher." He Later Directed And Starred With Friend, Bill Cosby, In A Trilogy Of Films - "Uptown Saturday Night," "A Piece Of The Action" And "Let's Do It Again." In The 1980s He Directed Richard Pryor And Gene Wilder In "Stir Crazy."
In 2001, Sidney Poitier Received An Honorary Academy Award For His Overall Contribution To American Cinema. In August 2009, Poitier Received The Medal Of Freedom From President Barack Obama.

Matthew Henson Matthew Henson Was Born On August 8, 1866, In Charles County, MD. He Was The Great-Grand-Nephew Of Josiah Henson, The Famous Runaway Slave And Author Who Helped Other Slaves To Freedom, Via The Underground Railroad.
Henson Lost His Parents While A Young Boy. He Went To Sea At Age 12 And Worked As A Cabin Boy On The Sailing Ship, Katie Hines. He Also Learned To Read And Write While Aboard Ship.
In 1887, He Met Commander Robert E. Peary And Was Hired As Servant For One Of The Lieutenant's Upcoming Expeditions. For The Next 20 Years Henson Would Accompany Peary On His Travels To The Arctic North, Including A History-Making Expedition In 1909.
On April 6, 1909, Matthew Henson Became The First Man To Reach The North Pole. Peary Arrived Approximately 45 Minutes After Henson.
The Temperature Was -29 Degrees When Henson Planted The American Flag At 90 Degrees North --- The North Pole Is The Only Place On The Planet Where The Only Way You Can Go, Is South.
Upon His Return To The United States, Henson Mainly Lectured And Wrote The Book, A Negro Explorer At The North Poll, In 1912.
Due To The Racist Attitudes Of The Time, Matthew Henson's Contributions And Accomplishment Went Unrecognized For Decades In America; Peary Received The Credit For Reaching The North Pole.
On January 28, 1944 Explorer, Matthew Alexander Henson Received A Congressional Medal For His Work On The History-Making Expedition.
Henson, Died March 9, 1955. In 1988 He Is Buried In Arlington National Cemetery.
