Malcolm X

Picture
El Hajj Malik El-Shabazz./Malcolm X, Noted Black Historian, John Henrik Clarke And Other Black Nationalists Leaders Founded The ORGANIZATION OF AFRO-AMERICAN UNITY On June 28, 1964, In Harlem, New York. Malcolm Announced The Founding Of The Group At A Rally.

Formed Shortly After His Break With The Nation Of Islam (Initially Due To Remarks He Made About The Assassination Of President John F. Kennedy), The OAAU Was A Secular Institution That Sought To Unify 22 Million Non-Muslim African Americans With The People Of The African Continent. The OAAU Was Modeled After The ORGANIZATION OF AFRICAN UNITY (OAU), A Coalition Of 53 African Nations Working To Provide A Unified Political Voice For The Continent.

Malcolm
Sought To Reconnect Black Americans With Their African Heritage, Establish Economic Independence, And Promote African American Self-determination. He also Wanted OAAU Representation On The OAU.

The OAAU Called For African American-Run Institutions Within The Black Community -- As Well As Increased Participation In Mainstream Politics. In An Effort To Keep The OAAU Strictly In The Hands Of Black Americans, Malcolm Insisted That There Be No Monetary Donations From Non-African Sources. The Organization Also Refused Membership To Whites.

The OAAU's Constitution Contained The Following, For The Basic Unity Program:

1. Restoration: "In order to release ourselves from the oppression of our enslavers then, it is absolutely necessary for the Afro-American to restore communication with Africa."

2. Reorientation: "We can learn much about Africa by reading informative books."

3.Education: "The Organization of Afro-American Unity will devise original educational methods and procedures which will liberate the minds of our children. We will ... encourage qualified Afro-Americans to write and publish the textbooks needed to liberate our minds ... educating them [our children] at home."

4. Economic Security: "After the Emancipation Proclamation ... it was realized that the Afro-American constituted the largest homogeneous ethnic group with a common origin and common group experience in the United States and, if allowed to exercise economic or political freedom, would in a short period of time own this country. We must establish a technician bank. We must do this so that the newly independent nations of Africa can turn to us who are their brothers for the technicians they will they will need now and in the future."

Malcolm's Half-Sister, Ella Collins, Took Over The OAAU, Following His Murder On February 21, 1965, However, Most Members Left The Group That Now Lacked Charismatic Leadership. Nevertheless, The OAAU Inspired The Formation Of Future "Black Power" Groups During The Next Decade And Beyond.

Paul Laurence Dunbar

Picture
On This Day In 1872,  Paul Laurence Dunbar Was Born In Dayton, Ohio.

The Son Of Former Slaves, Dunbar Became A Prolific And Popular Turn-Of The-Century Writer. Booker T. Washington Dubbed Him "Poet Laureate Of The Negro Race."

Dunbar Was Most Widely Known For ("Negro") Dialect Poetry, Although He Favored His Standard English Writings.

His First Volume Of Poetry, "Oak And Ivory," Was Published In 1892, With The Help Of His Friends Orville And Wilbur Wright.

His 1896 Collection, "Majors And Minors," Won Critical Acclaim, And In 1901 His Novel, "Sport Of The Gods," Was Published. "Sport Of The Gods" Represents Dunbar's Transition Into Naturalist Tradition Embraced By Writers In The Early 1900's. Naturalist Novels Presented A More "Scientific" View Of Life.

The Following Is An Excerpt From "Sport Of The Gods (Chapter 7):"

The subtle, insidious wine of New York will begin to intoxicate him. Then, if he be wise, he will go away, anyplace--yes he will even go over to Jersey. But if he be a fool, he will stay and stay until the town becomes all in all to him; until the very streets are his chums and certain buildings and corners his best friends. Then he is hopeless, and to live elsewhere would be his death.

Dunbar Died At The Age Of 34, From Tuberculosis. His Home, Located At 219 Summit Street In Dayton, Remains Very Much The Same As It Was At The Time Of His Death In 1906.

Joe Louis

Picture
On The Night Of June 22, 1938, Heavyweight Boxing Champion, Joe Louis, And Former German Heavyweight Champion, Max Schmeling, Met For The Second Time In The Boxing Ring. The Fight Was Held In Yankee Stadium Before A Crowd Of 70,043 And broadcast To Millions of Radio Listeners Throughout The World. It Took Louis Only 2 Minutes And 4 Seconds To Beat Schmeling. Subsequently, And For A Time, The "Brown Bomber" Was A Hero In Segregated America's Black And White Communities.

Between The 1936 Loss To Schmeling And The 1938 Rematch, Joe Louis Had Become Heavyweight Champion By Beating James J. Braddock. In 1937.

The Rematch Was Both Politically And Socially Important To America Because In 1936 Schmeling Handed Louis His
First Professional Loss, Became A National Hero And Germany's Symbol For The Doctrine  Of "Aryan Superiority." Many Blacks Saw This And Other Louis Fights As Literally "Striking A Blow" At White Racism And Opression..

For Several Years Following Louis/Schmeling II, Louis Continued To Fight And America Exploited His Talents And Reputation As An "Acceptable Negro." He Began A Period Of Service In The Army And Worked As A Physical Education Teacher. He Retired In 1949 -- Still The Undefeated Champion. Succumbing To Financial Pressures And Government Debts, Louis Was Forced Back Into The Ring In 1950. A Series Of Losses Followed -- Including DefeatsTo Ezzard Charles And Rocky Marciano.

Joe Louis Still Holds The Distinction Of Having Successfully Defended His Title More Times Than Any Other Heavyweight In History. He Knocked Out Five World Champions And Is Considered By Many, The Greatest Heavyweight Champion In Boxing History.

It Should Also Be Noted That Joe Louis, Who Also Had A Passion For Golf, Joined The Professional Golfers Association In 1952 And Became The First Black American To Play In A PGA Sanctioned Event.

Joseph Louis Barrow Was Born May 13, 1914, In La Fayette, Alabama, He Died Of A Heart Attack, April 12, 1981. He Was 66 Years Old. On August 26, 1982, Louis Was Posthumously Approved For The Congressional Gold Medal, The Highest Award Given To Civilians By The U.S. Legislative Branch.
