Actress, Singer, Stage/Radio Performer, Television Star, Hattie McDaniel, Died On October 26, 1952. She Was 57 Years Old.
McDaniel Was Born June 10, 1895, In Wichita, KS, To Ex-Slave Parents. She Was The Youngest Of Thirteen Children.
She Began Her Professional Career On The Vaudeville, Circuit. She Was An Excellent Blues Singer And The First Black Woman To Sing On Radio. She Starred As The Domestic, Beulah, On Both Radio And Television. During The 1930's And 1940's McDaniel Acted In More Than 70 Films. Her Roles Were Usually That Of The "Supportive But Independent And Outspoken Mammy."
It Was That Type Of Role For Which She Received The 1939 Oscar For Best Supporting Actress. She Played Mammy In The Movie, Gone With The Wind And Became The First Black American To Win An Academy Award.
When Addressing Critics About Her Choice Of Movie Roles McDaniel Said, "I'd Rather Play A Maid For $700 A Week Than Be One For $7.00 A Week."

Mary McLeod Bethune
Founded By Educator And Civil Rights Activist, Mary McLeod Bethune, Bethune-Cookman College Opened Its Doors On October 3, 1904.
The Daughter Of Former Slaves (Samuel And Patsy McLeod), Mary Bethune Was Born July 10, 1875, In Mayesville, South Carolina. She Was One Of 17 Children.
Growing Up She Worked In The Cotton Fields Of South Carolina. She Eventually Made Her Way Through College (Scotia Seminary, Near Concord, NC), Got Married (To Albertus Bethune), And Had A Son.
Mary McLeod Bethune Would Go On To Become One Of The Most Influential And Important Black Women In History.
In 1904, With Only a $1.50 To Invest, She Built Daytona Normal And Industrial School For Negro Girls. The Original Four-Room Schoolhouse Was Built On A Garbage Dump. After Merging With The Cookman Institute For Men In 1923, Bethune-Cookman College Became One Of The Finest Institutions Of Higher Learning In The Country.Bethune Served As The School's President From 1904-1942.
Bethune Was Known As "America's First Black Lady," And Served Regularly As An Advisor To Presidents. She Worked With Herbert Hoover On Child Health Issues And With Franklin D. Roosevelt On Youth And Minority Affairs. She Was Harry S. Truman's Personal Representative At The Inauguration Ceremony Of The President Of Liberia.
In 1935, Bethune Founded, And Was The First President Of, The National Council Of Negro Women.
She Died Of A Heart Attack In 1955. In 1974, The $400,000 Mary McLeod Bethune Memorial Was Unveiled In Washington DC's Lincoln Park. The Inscription Was Taken From Her Own Words:
"I leave you love, I leave you hope, I leave you the challenge of developing confidence in one another. I leave you a thirst for education. I leave you respect for the uses of power. I leave you faith. I leave you racial dignity."

Jesse B. Blayton Sr.
WERD, America's First Black Radio Station, Began Operating In Atlanta, Georgia On October 3, 1949. Jesse B. Blayton Sr. Became The First Black Radio Station Owner And Operator In The United States When He Bought The Station.
The Station Was Originally Scheduled To Begin Broadcasting In Mid-August, But Racially Motivated Vandalism Of A $5,000 Steel Tower Delayed The Opening.
WERD Was Managed By Magic City Broadcasting Company And Was "operated by Negro personnel for Negro patronage." According To The New York Times It Was "devoted to education, music and religious programs, with nothing of a 'controversial nature' on the air."
WERD Was Housed In The Same Building As The Southern Christian Leadership Conference Headquarters. The SCLC Was Led By Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. It Has Been Said That King Would Beat The Roof Of The Office With A Broomstick As A Signal To Send The Microphone Down When He Wanted To Make Public Addresses.
