On May 25, 1878, Luther Bill Robinson Was Born In Richmond, Virginia. And With Him, A New Word Was Added To The English Language. Best Known As Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, He Coined The Term, "Copacetic," Which Meant Okay Or Fine.

Robinson Began His Career In Vaudeville. His Tap Dancing (Considered An Original African American Art), Took Him To Broadway And Hollywood In The 1920's.

He Starred In Several Films, Stormy Weather (1943) , And Three With Child Actress, Shirley Temple: The Little Colonel (1935), The Littlest Rebel (1936) And Rebecca Of Sunnybrook Farm (1938). With These Films He Became An American Dance Legend And Inspired Generations Of Young Dancers, Including Fred Astaire.

Robinson Who Died In New York, November 25, 1949, Said His Nickname, Bojangles, Means "Easygoing And Happy-Go-Lucky." Sammy Davis, Jr. Revived The Bojangles Legacy With His 1969, Hit Song, "Mr. Bojangles."

Legendary Composer, Pianist And Big-Band Leader, Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington, Died Of Lung Cancer In New York City, On May 24, 1974.

One Of The Most Creative And Important Composers Of The 20th Century, Ellington Influenced American Music From The Swing Era Of The 1930's Until His Death In The 1970's.

Born April 29, 1899, For More Than Half A Century, Ellington Led What Some Critics Consider "The Best Jazz Orchestra Of All Time." The Ellington Orchestra's (Also Known As The Jungle Band) Early Recordings Included: "Creole Love Call," "Jubilee Stomp," "Black And Tan Fantasy"\And "Hot And Bothered." In Later Years, The Band's Signature Tune Became "Take The 'A' Train."

Other Major Compositions By Ellington Include: "It Don't Mean A Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing)," "Mood Indigo," "Do Nothing 'Til You Hear From Me," "(In My) Solitude, "I
Got It Bad (And That Ain't Good)" "Sophisticated Lady" And "Satin Doll."

Ellington Composed Scores For, And Appeared In Several Movies, Including A Day The Races (1937), Cabin In The Sky (1943) And Paris Blues (1961).

Other Musicians Such As Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck, Judy Collins And Stevie Wonder (With The Song, "Sir Duke," 1977) Have Paid Musical Tributes To Ellington Over The Years.

The Musical-Comedy Featured Extraordinary Singing, Dancing And Comedy Routines. It Also Launched The Careers Of Several Black Entertainers, Including Florence Mills, Josephine Baker, Eubie Blake And Noble Sissle.

Blake Composed The Show's Music Which Featured Songs That Would become American Classics. "Love Will Find A Way," " In Honeysuckle Time," And "I'm Just Wild About Harry (A Song That Became Harry Truman's Presidential Theme Song)," Were Among The Show's Most Popular Tunes.

Some Historians Cite Shuffle Along As The Beginning Of The Harlem Renaissance.

On May 22, 1967, One Of The Most Prolific American Writers Of The 20th Century Died. Langston Hughes Passed Away In New York City, While Working On A New Collection Of Poetry That Was Later Published As " The Panther And The Lash."

Hughes' Career Spanned From The Harlem Renaissance Of The 1920s Through The "New Black Renaissance" Of The 1960s.

His First Volume Of Poetry, The Weary Blues, Was Published In 1926 And His First Book Of Short Stories, The Ways Of White Folks, In 1934.

Hughes' Novels, Poetry, Plays And Short Stories Were Central To The Transition Of Black Writing From "The Plantation Tradition" To Contemporary, Urbane Forms Which Promoted Racial Pride.

In 1960 Langston Hughes Received The NAACP's Spingarn Medal, At Which Time He Was Dubbed, The "Poet Laureate Of The Negro Race," Hughes Is Also Considered One Of The Most Important American Writers Of The 20th Century.

The Following Poem Can be Interpreted As An Inversion Of The Golden Rule And As A Creed For Survival. It Is Also One Of My Personal Favorites:

College Basketball Legend, Clarence Edward "Big House Gaines," Was Born On This Day In 1923.

A Native Of Paducah, Kentucky And 1945 Graduate Of Morgan State University, Gaines Found His Way To Winston Salem, North Carolina. He Became The Football, And Later, Basketball Coach At Winston Salem State University.

He Built One Of The Strongest And Most Competative Basketball Programs In The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA). Conference. Among His Former Players Are NBA Hall-Of-Famer, Earl "The Pearl" Monroe And ESPN Commentator And Columnist, Stepehen A. Smith.

Gaines Coached The Winston Salem State Rams From 1946 -1993. During His 47-Year Career He Compiled An 828 - 447 Record. His Teams Won 20 Or More Games, 18 Times And He Coached The WSSU Rams To Eight CIAA Conference Titles.
His 1966-67 Team Made Winston Salem State University The First Historically Black School To Win An NCAA Title. Gaines Was Also Named National Coach Of The Year In 1967. He Was The CIAA Conference Coach Of The Year Five Different Times.

As One Of The All-Time Winningest Men's College Basketball Coaches, Gaines Was  Inducted Into The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall Of Fame In 1982 -- The Only Black American Inducted  As A Coach.

Clarence Gaines Died On April 18, 2005, At The Age Of 81.

Mary McLeod Bethune, One Of America's Greatest Educators And Activists, Died On May 18, 1955.

The Daughter Of Former Slaves (Samuel And Patsy McLeod), Mary Bethune Was Born July 10, 1875, In Mayesville, South Carolina. She Was One Of 17 Children.

Growing Up She Worked In The Cotton Fields Of South Carolina. She Eventually Made Her Way Through College (Scotia Seminary, Near Concord, NC), Got Married (To Albertus Bethune) And Had A Son.

Mary McLeod Bethune Would Go On To Become One Of The Most Influential And Important African Americans In History.

In 1904, With Only a $1.50 To Invest, She Built Daytona Normal And Industrial School For Negro Girls. The Original Four-Room Schoolhouse Was Built On A Garbage Dump. After Merging With The Cookman Institute For Men In 1923, Bethune-Cookman College Became One Of The Finest Institutions Of Higher Learning In The Country. Bethune Served As The School's President From 1904-1942.

Bethune Was Known As "America's First Black Lady," And Served Regularly As An Advisor To Presidents. She Worked With Herbert Hoover On Child Health Issues And With Franklin D. Roosevelt On Youth And Minority Affairs. She Was Harry S. Truman's Personal Representative At The Inauguration Ceremony Of The President Of Liberia.

In 1935, Bethune Founded, And Was The First President Of, The National Council Of Negro Women.

She Died Of A Heart Attack In 1955. In 1974, The $400,000 Mary McLeod Bethune Memorial Was Unveiled In Washington DC's Lincoln Park. The Inscription Was Taken From Her Own Words:

"I leave you love, I leave you hope, I leave you the challenge of developing confidence in one another. I leave you a thirst for education. I leave you respect for the uses of power. I leave you faith. I leave you racial dignity."

On This Day In 1954, The U.S. Supreme Court Handed Down Its Decision In The History-Making Case Of Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka. Chief Justice Earl B. Warren Read The Court's Decision:

"Does segregation of children in public schools soley on the base of race, even though the physical facilities and other 'tangible' factors may be equal, deprive the children of the minority group of equal education opportunities? We believe that it does...."

The Case Began When Reverend Oliver Brown Of Topeka, Kansas Attempted To Enroll His Daughter, Linda, In Summer Elementary School, Which Was Closer To His Home Than The Black Schools. The Case Was Taken Up By The NAACP, With Thurgood Marshall Acting As The Group's Chief Counsel.

"We conclude (continued Justice Warren) that in the field of public education the doctrine of 'separate but equal' has no place. Separate educational facilities are inherently unequal. Therefore, we hold that the plaintiffs and others similarly situated for whom the actions have been brought, are by reason of the segregation complained of, deprived of equal protection of the laws guaranteed by the Fourteenth Amendment."

The Court's Ruling That "Separate But Equal" Was Not Possible In America's Public Schools, Overturned The Decision In The Previously Argued Case, Plessey v. Ferguson, And Put A "Legal" End To Segregation In America.  However, In The Decades That Followed Brown, Southern States Resisted Integration. They Created "Freedom Of Choice" Programs, Funded Private/Segregated, Schools, And Even Closed Public Schools.

By 1964, Less Than 2 Percent Of Southern Blacks Were Enrolled In Desegregated Schools.

Legendary And Multi-talented Entertainer, Sammy Davis, Jr. Died Of  Throat cancer, May 16, 1990. Davis Was a Dancer, Singer, Actor And  Comedian, Who Worked In Stage, Television, Films And Nightclubs.

Samuel George Davis, Jr. Was Born In New York City, New York, December 8, 1925,   To Sammy Davis, Sr., A Black Entertainer And Elvera Sanchez. He Began His Career  As A Child Performer In Vaudeville, Working With His Father And  "Uncle" As The Will Mastin Trio.

He Got His First Movie Role In 1933, In "Rufus Jones For President."  He Served In The Army During World War II, Mainly Entertaining The Troops. In 1954, He  Lost His Left Eye In An Automobile Accident. Later That Same Year, He Converted To Judaism. In 1959 He Became Part Of Frank Sinatra's "Rat Pack." In 1964, He Starred In The Musical,  "Golden Boy," For Which He Was Nominated For  A Tony Award And By 1966, Had His Own TV Variety Show.  His Renditions Of Songs Like, "That Old Black Magic," "I've Gotta Be Me" And "The Candy Man,"  Became National Favorites.

Like Many Other Black Entertainers, Sammy Davis Was The Victim Of Racism During His Career. During His Early Years In Las Vegas, Davis And other Black Artists Could Entertain, But Usually Could Not Stay  At The Hotels Where They Performed, Gamble In the Casinos, Nor Eat  Or Drink In The Hotel Restaurants And Bars.  Davis  Took a Stand And Later Refused To work At Places That Practiced. Racial Segregation.He Was An Avid Supporter Of  Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. And The Civil Rights Movement, During The 1960s. The NAACP Awarded Him  The Spingarn Medal In 1968.

His Film And Television Credits Include: "Porgy And Bess" (1959), "Ocean's Eleven" (1960), "All in the Family," "The Rifleman," "Ben Casey,"  "Robin And The 7 Hoods" (1964), "The Jeffersons," "Sweet Charity" (1969) "Tap" (1989) And "The Cosby Show."

Sammy Davis, Jr. Inspired A Generation Of Black Performers, Including Gregory Hines, Michael Jackson And Savion Glover. Among His Many Honors: Induction Into The Civil Rights Walk
Of Fame (2008), Induction Into The Grammy Hall Of Fame (2002), Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award Winner (2001), Induction Into  The Las Vegas Walk Of Stars (2006), NAACP Image Award Winner  (1989), Kennedy Center Honors Honoree (1987) And  Hollywood Walk Of Fame  Star Recipient (1960).

In 1968, Davis Started Dating Altovise Gore, A Dancer In "Golden Boy."  They Were Married on May 11, 1970 By The Reverend Jesse Jackson,  Adopted A child And Remained Married Until Davis' Death.

On May 15, 1949, The Following Letter To The Editor (Excerpted) Appeared In The Washington Post. It Was Written By Civil Rights Activist And NAACP Co-Founder, Mary Church Terrell:

"I am urging the Post and others willing to advance our interests and deal justly with our group to stop using the word, 'Negro.' The word is a misnomer from every point of view. It does not represent a country or anything else....

To be sure the complexion of the Chinese and Japanese is yellow. But nobody refers to an individual in either group as a colored man.... They say he is Chinese.... When I studied abroad and was introduced as an 'American' ... occasionally somebody would say, 'You are rather dark to be an American, aren't you?' 'Yes,' I would reply, 'I am dark because some of my ancestors were Africans.' I was proud of having the continent of Africa part of my ancestrial background. 'I am an African-American,' I would explain. I am not ashamed of my African decent. Africa had great universities before there were any in England and the African was the first man industrious and skillful enough to work in iron. If our group must have a special name setting it apart, the sensible way to settle it would be to refer to our ancestors, the Africans, from whom our swarthy complexions come."

Mary Church Terrell Was Born During The Civil War, In 1863. She Graduated From Oberlin College in 1884, And Was One Of The First Black Women In America To Receive A College Degree.

She Was A Charter Member And First President Of The National Association Of Colored Women.

Mary Church Terrell Died In 1954.

Cole Was The Second Black American To Win $1,000,000 On The Popular Television Show ( Vecepia Towery Won In Show's 4th Season), And The First Black Male To Ever Win. He Received A Unanimous Decision From The Nine Jurors, Another First In The Show's 14-Season Run.

The 19-Member Cast Included Five Blacks, Three Of Whom Became Finalists For The $1 Million Prize.

Earl Cole Is A Native Of Kansas City, Kansas And Worked As A Senior Marketing Executive In California. He Is Also An Accomplished Musician (He Plays Five Instruments), Composer And A Member Of The American Society Of Composers, Authors & Publishers (ASCAP).
