Born In Charleston, SC In 1943, Gantt Attended Clemson University, In 1963. He Was The First Black Admitted To The School And Received A Degree In Architecture. He Later Went To MIT, Where He Got His Master's In City Planning.
Gantt Served On The Charlotte City Council From 1974 - 1983. He Was Charlotte's Mayor From 1983 Until 1987. He Staged Two Unsuccessful U.S. Senatorial Campaigns Against Jesse Helms -- One In 1990 And 1996.
Today Gantt Runs A Successful Architectural Firm, Gantt Huberman Architects. He Also Remains Active In Politics -- Having Served On The North Carolina Democratic Executive Council, the Democratic National Committee And As Chair of the National Capital Planning Commission..
