On November 4, 1988, Bill And Camille Cosby Presented A Gift Of $20 Million To Spelman College. One Of The Cosbys' Daughters Had Attended The Prestigious Women's HBCU In Atlanta, Georgia. At the Time, This Was The Single Largest Donation Ever Made To A Black College, As Well As, The Single Largest Single Charitable Donation, Ever Made By ANY Back American.
Most HBCUs Were Established After The American Civil War. However, Cheyney University of Pennsylvania, Established In 1837, Lincoln University (Pennsylvania), Established in 1854, And Wilberforce University, Established in 1856, Were Established For Blacks Prior To The American Civil War.Today, There Are 106 Historically Black Colleges And Universities, In America. From 1944-1995, The United Negro College Fund Raised Approximately $1 Billion For 44 Of These Institutions. In 1970, Federal Aid To HBCUs Was $125 Million. By 1992, Government Aid Had Increased To Over $633 Million.
The Historically Black College Or University Provides A Unique Education For Black Americans. Statistics Show, Students Who Attend HBCUs Graduate With Greater Frequency Than Black Students At Predominantly White Universities.
