Originally Called The Raleigh Institute, It Changed Its name In 1870, To Shaw Collegiate Institute, To Honor Its Chief Financial Supporter, Elijah Shaw, Of Wales, Massachusetts. In 1875, It Was Chartered By The State Of North Carolina As Shaw University.
The School's Original Curriculum Was Established On "freedom theology" And Biblical Interpretation. Within Fifteen Years, However, Shaw Broadened Its Curriculum To Include The Liberal Arts.
